Biographie
Chaimae Lehamaoui (born 1995, Morocco) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice centres on folded and sculpted paper. Drawing from origami and geometric construction, she develops modular reliefs and installations that explore the tension between fragility and structure, rule and deviation. Lehamaoui graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan, Design Department, and also holds a bachelor s degree in Economics and Business Management. She currently lives and works in Ifrane , Morocco. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Morocco, France and Egypt, including ELFAKHAR Gallery (Tetouan), Actua Art Space (Casablanca), Nile Art Gallery and The Art Gallery (Cairo), as well as in the 8th Edition of the Adam Henein Sculpture Art Prize at Hanager Arts Center, Cairo. She has taken part in workshops and labs in Morocco, Egypt and France, notably within Cairotronica, D‑CAF, BASMA Fine Arts, and the Video Mapping Festival in Lille. Her works are included in corporate and private collections such as Atelier 27 (Paris), Nile Art Gallery (Cairo), and several collections in Morocco, France and Egypt. In 2020 she received the Excellence Award for Top Graduates of the National Institute of Fine Arts of Tetouan.
Démarche
My work begins with a fold. It is a simple action, almost like a rule: a line, an angle, a repetition. From this starting point I build modular structures in paper that sit between object and architecture. Each unit follows a clear instruction, but when many units come together, small deviations appear. I am interested in this space where order starts to drift, and where a fragile material can still form a stable whole. Origami and geometric drawing give me a precise vocabulary, and I treat it with a certain flexibility. I repeat forms, shift them, interrupt them. The compositions often refer to circles, spirals or grids, suggesting cycles, balance and continuity, while at the same time revealing tensions, gaps and thresholds. Light and shadow play a crucial role: as the viewer moves, the relief changes, and a quiet choreography unfolds between body and surface. Folding, for me, is both a material technique and a way of thinking. It makes visible how individual gestures aggregate into larger structures, how rules can organise a space but also how they can be questioned or gently broken. Through these works I aim to create spaces for contemplation, where precision and intuition, solidity and openness, coexist.
