Mea culpa

2025

After separating two continents, killing Antaeus, and tricking Atlas into stealing the golden apple, Hercules is left with a fruit no one wants, an apple that will eventually be returned to its rightful place in the Garden of the Hesperides. He realizes that all great quests are born from boredom and the urge to expand; he has earned an immortality made of regrets and emptiness. This painting depicts a tired Hercules, seated between the two columns he once tore apart. Around him are painted postcards of his journey through Morocco: Lixus, near Larache, believed to be the location of the Hesperides’ garden; the Mzora cromlech, thought to be Antaeus’s burial site; Jebel Musa, one of the columns he used to divide Morocco and Spain; and the Hercules Caves in Tangier, where he is said to have rested after his labor. It’s a representation of the hero’s hangover, the aftermath. What happens after the big party ends? What remains for someone who has completed all twelve labors?
