Biography
Born in Casablanca (Morocco) in 1987 where she lives and works
Sophia Engi Slaoui is an architect by training, graduated in Fine Arts from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design (London), she then specialized in architectural design.
Her work puts into tension different dialectics inscribed in the functioning of our post-modern societies which she renders through a fluid and distorted treatment of incoherent subjects tending to provoke the viewer's perceptions.
She is particularly interested in notions linked to appearances and the different, often contradictory, forces on which they are constructed.
Engi is particularly inspired by the works of Francis Bacon for his carnal expressionism and those of Hilma af Klint for her metaphysical symbolism and finally by her readings of the psychoanalytic theories of Jacques Lacan.
In her new series of “Coding Spaces”, she operates alternative plastic juxtapositions of superimposed spaces allowing us to perceive the essence of existence oscillating from void to solid, from light to darkness, in reality as in reality. 'imaginary.

Artistic approach
Deconstruction: Breaking down the barriers between physical and virtual space, exploring the tension between chaos and order.
Distortion: Pushing the limits of abstraction to create gestures that challenge the viewer's perception of space, time and reality.
Hybridization: Merging traditional painting techniques with digital techniques to create paintings that exist at the intersection of the physical and virtual worlds.
Disruption: Create works that challenge the role of technology in our lives and inspire us to reconsider our relationship with the digital world.
>>>> One of his works from his previous series, entitled "Regard d'ego", was acquired and is now part of the permanent collection of the Al Maaden Museum of Contemporary African Art.
