Berhil Hamza is a multidisciplinary visual artist born on January 10, 1990 in Aït Melloul, Morocco, and who currently lives and works between Laâyoune and Marrakech.
Graduating from the National Institute of Fine Arts of Tetouan in 2018, he has since worked on several artistic projects exploring the themes of identity, diaspora and Arab Amazigh culture.
A descendant of a tribe that experienced a diaspora in northern Africa, Hamza Berhil himself experienced a modern diaspora with its repetitive travels, which engendered in him a certain lack of notion of home. This experience, lived with her little family, fueled her fascination with the way her mother used old fabrics to make her own suitcases, thus leaving a trace of their experiences.
This practice reminds us that cultures are often linked to territories, but that modern diasporas have blurred the boundaries between cultures, giving rise to a modern diaspora. The modern diaspora is a phenomenon resulting from globalization, migration and forced displacement of populations.
It is characterized by a lack of sense of home, a loss of cultural references and a need to reinvent a new identity through interaction with new cultures. Repetitive displacements, often linked to situations of conflict, war or difficult economic conditions, have made it difficult for the people concerned to anchor themselves in a single culture.
Hamza Berhil is passionate about Amazigh & Arab-Sahrawi culture and grew up between the two cultures, which allowed him to draw on this cultural wealth to create works exploring themes of migration, identity and diversity cultural.

Ma demarche artistique, nourrie par mon heritage sahraoui et mes racines amazighes, explore les notions de deracinement, de diaspora et la construction d’identites hybrides dans un monde globalise. A travers la peinture, la sculpture et la photographie, je transforme mon experience intime de l’exil en une reflexion universelle sur la perte des reperes et l’appartenance culturelle. Mon travail se veut a la fois un temoignage sur la condition sahraouie et un pont engageant un dialogue sur les recompositions identitaires contemporaines.
