Biography
Yasmina Ouahid, Moroccan artist. Born in 1993 in Tetouan and graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts in the same city in 2015, she then moved to Paris where in 2018 she obtained a Master's degree in creation and contemporary plasticities from the Panthéon Sorbonne University.
The artist was very influenced by the city of Tetouan where she grew up. Its socio-cultural environment is full of rituals and practices linked to bodily aesthetics, clothing appearance, floral cultivation, manual labor and textile trades held by women. All these elements strongly and consciously influenced his artistic practice.
Through her work she explores these elements, invests a set of techniques and materials, examines their materiality, their plasticity and attempts to decode them, decontextualize them and analyze them in a global and universal context. His creative process generally involves research, documentation, experimentation and manipulation of objects. It is a work of assembly, recycling, construction of forms in a space, on a support and sometimes of repurposing or modifying objects.
The artist explores questions of identity and social construction, cultural hybridizations and the status of women through clothing fashions. She questions the power of images and their role in the domination of “the other”, the clash of civilizations, the decadence of cultural identities.
