"Fractured Symmetry: Urban & Rural"
This project explores my personal experience of being caught between two
contrasting environments: the urban setting of Casablanca, where I grew up, and
the rural landscape of the High Atlas mountains, where I spent my summers. This
duality creates a surreal mental landscape and a sense of living with "two visions"
in the mind, illustrating how environment profoundly affects people
psychologically.
All photographs in this project were captured between 2023 and 2024 using
analog photography, employing various expired rolls of 35mm color film. I chose
expired film because it is also impacted by the environment, reflecting my own
experience. The film grain represents traces and a sense of pain. Each photograph
is a composite image, created by merging two separate photographs using
Photoshop, resulting in a technique similar to double exposure. This project emerges from my personal experience, growing up in a bustling city
and the mental contrast I experienced when traveling to my mother's hometown. In the rural landscape, I found peace of mind and reconnected with the place
where I spent each summer as a child. Through this work, I aim to create a poetic
visual series influenced by surrealistic art, particularly the work of Frida Kahlo, Vincent van Gogh and Betty lane, Val telberg.
