Biography
Aicha Abouhaj is a self-taught artist from Casablanca.
After studying graphic design at lnfodesign, she sought to familiarize herself with artistic practice by experimenting
gradually different mediums and techniques.
She is particularly interested in topics related to women and the vernacular practice of Berber tattooing, which is threatened with extinction.
She strives to preserve this memory by reinterpreting this graphic sign language through colorful paintings and sculptures.
Artistic approach
"My plastic and personal questions concern a collective memory threatened with disappearance like a dead language which no longer has currency or use. This symbolic and vernacular language conveyed in particular by recurring and ancient motifs is found as well on textiles, pottery and various artisanal and even proto-artistic creations; and also on the very skin of women through long-lasting tattoos whose animist meaning has sometimes been lost.
I transcribe these forgotten stories of an animist and pre-Islamic world through sculptures designed as totemic architectures which seem to still contain a little of the soul or spirit which imagined them.
With vibrant colors drawn from a colorimetric repertoire specific to Berber jewelry, I give a contemporary dimension to the engraved symbol.
This visual interpretation of the Amazigh Woman tends to give back its place to stories of local and situated feminism that are often forgotten or passed over in silence. "
